I went to Mary Washington College fully intending to graduate in 1990 with a degree in English and a teaching certificate. I almost got sidetracked by Historic Preservation, even doing an internship at the Association for Preservation Technology, but hung with my dream of one day teaching high school students to love James Thurber as much as I do. After an impressively bad student-teaching experience (kids were great; "cooperating" teachers were horrible), I instead came home with the BA in English and no teaching certificate. One of my aunts suggested the government and I really didn't want to go that route, still believing teaching was the only field for me, but ended up at USDA working for a very driven plant pathologist. I learned a lot about the Land Grant System and began to work in grants administration. USDA "collapsed" my agency and the Extension Service (the people who bring you 4-H and Cooperative Extension Services) and created a much larger organization. I shifted into grants policy and began managing our agency's Paperwork Reduction Act process (even though it's a misnomer). In early 1998, I had enough of the politics within my agency and began looking for another job and in November 1998, came here to the National Science Foundation (the people who sort of brought you the Internet, the UPC symbol, and Lasik!!) and have been extremely happy. Admittedly, I'm still working in Paperwork Reduction Act management for NSF and it's not as glamorous as the Internet, but it's nice to be able to do my job without the politics of USDA. I get notices published in the Federal Register and my mother is very proud (even if she doesn't quite get my job). I hope to one day go back to school and get an advanced degree, but I've had to modify my plans a little.

I met my husband, Scott, in October 1992 and we started dating in March 1993. After a year or so, we got engaged and then married in August 1994. We were living in Belle View in one of the condos until 1998, when we moved to Annandale. We got a pug in 1999 and then had our first child, Owen, in March 2001. In July 2002, I found out I was pregnant again and we got our second pug. In March 2003, we had our second son, Brian, and decided to avoid getting any more pugs. In 2004, we started looking for another house (married people without children who buy houses don't often think about school districts) to be closer to NSF and the Metro (for Scott). Late in the year, we moved to Arlington, continuing our quest to move alphabetically across Northern Virginia. Right before we moved, we took on a third pug from the Maryland Pug Dog Club Pug Rescue (!) and then, in August 2005, found out I was pregnant with our third baby (due in mid-April). We've decided -- no more pugs.

We keep busy with the boys, volunteering at our church, keeping track of the dogs, and learning more about our (semi) new neighborhood and volunteer opportunities around Arlington. Owen will be starting Kindergarten in September (sob) and I am looking forward to helping at his school.

Kudos to Ray for starting this!
